With the aim of treating and caring for your horse, or the horses under your responsibility, and also to acquire new effective therapeutic tools, develop your profession, stand out from other practitioners and acquire professions that are in great demand in the labor market, with international certificates from the leading institutions in the field and for the first time in the country.

About the program

Laser therapy is gaining in popularity due to its benefits in exercise recovery.

As demands increase on the equine population; laser therapy can assist in the treatment of chronic pain and inflammation as well as promoting tissue growth and wound healing. During this course you will learn the fundamentals of laser therapy, the indications and contraindications for use, and the clinical application of laser therapy. This course will meet for a duration of 3 days and will largely include hands-on active learning through direct practice. The term Laser is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser light is monochromatic, collimated, and coherent. A laser is a device that produces such a light. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is used by some physiotherapists to treat various musculoskeletal condition. LLLT is a non-invasive light source treatment that generates a single wavelength of light. It emits no heat, sound, or vibration. It is also called photobiology or biostimulation. LLLT is believed to affect the function of connective tissue cells (fibroblasts), accelerate connective tissue repair and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. Lasers with different wavelengths, varying from 632 to 904 nm, are used in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Wavelengths between 660 nm and 905 nm have the ability to penetrate skin, and soft/hard tissues. This light have a good effect on pain, inflammation and tissue repair.

An output power of less than 0.5 Watts is classed as LLLT (class III in the USA) whereas lasers with an output powers than 500 mW or 0.5 Watts are termed High Power Laser Therapy HPLT (Class IV lasers in the USA). HPLT creates heat on the surface of the skin due to their higher power density (irradiance). LLLT is often referred to as “Cold Lasers” since they do not create a heating sensation during treatment.[2]

Effects of LLLT The effects of the LLLT which are significant for physiotherapy, and makes this tool useful to enhance other treatments as therapeutic exercise, are:

• Reduction of inflammation: It can occur within hours to days.

• Pain relief

• Accelerated tissue regeneration: LLLT stimulates cell proliferation of fibroblasts, keratinocytes, endothelial cells and lymphocytes.

In physiotherapy LLLT is use for pain relief, accelerated tissue regeneration and reduction of inflammation.

Some of the benefits of using light therapy to treat wounds in horses include:

• It is safe, natural, non-invasive, and painless

• It increases microcirculation and formation of new capillaries.

• The wound area receives more oxygen and nutrients to help with the natural wound healing process.

• Promotes lymph system activity – this helps with detoxification of the wound without overtaxing the lymph system and prevents lymphoedema.

• Cleans up dead cells: boosted blood circulation helps with cleaning up dead or damaged cells, including dead bacteria.

• Promotes collagen and elastin production in the final wound healing phases.

• Helps to release ATP (raw cellular energy) which gives energy to the damaged cells in the wound so they can heal better and faster.

We will be using a variety of learning from classroom based to practical with a focus on learning through understanding. This is a very practically based course as the very best learning comes through hands on, the feel of the horse and how they communicate with their bodyworker. the tactile feedback is key and this is achieved through practice with a lot of support to aid understanding and progression.

Students will explore the difference between true laser, therapy laser, Laser Diodes and LEDs. The physiological effects of lasers, based on the evidence will be reviewed and the emphasis will be on their effects in tissue repair and healing. Students will explore, in practical’s, clinical application areas, doses and practical application issues.

 

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the basis of the physiology of electrotherapies action on tissues

  • Appraise practical applications, including doses and contra-indications, of a range of electrotherapies in the equine rehabilitation

  • Appraise the use of electrotherapies for sports and performance horses
