About the program

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy involving the use of aromatic substances, often essential oils. Aromatherapy can help promote both physical and psychological wellbeing and has many diverse applications, being employed in a wide range of settings, from health spas to hospitals, to treat a variety of conditions. Aromatherapy is often associated with relieving pain, improving mood, and promoting a sense of relaxation. However, the application of essential oils has far greater potential uses and actions that these alone. This programme is designed to give students a strong understanding of the uses and actions of a wide variety of essential oils and a strong foundation in aromatherapy and the use of essential oils that can be applied in a range of different ways.

The programme will provide an introduction to the subject of aromatherapy, some background and history, then cover the various ways in which aromatherapy can be employed, as a standalone therapy, or in conjunction with other therapies. The programme will explore who aromatherapy works, through the skin, the olfactory system, and the effects it has on the body.

The student will be introduced to essential oils, covering their manufacture and various extraction techniques, look at issues such as quality, purity, responsible sourcing; how to store and use essential oils safely; and a detailed review of a wide range of individual oils and their properties, uses, indications and contraindications.

The scientific evidence base will be explored both in terms of how essential effect the body and what action individual essential oils have.

This programme will provide students with multiple ways of approaching the subject, both from a western “chemical” scientific approach and also from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)approach. Essential oils chemistry will be reviewed, detailing the various chemical compounds in aromatic substances and their known action and effects. The programme will then review the use of essential oils from a TCM approach, looking at Qi and the flow of energy, Yin and Yang and balance, looking at the causes and patterns of disease, Five Element Theory and Fragrance Energetics. Combining all these approaches allows the student to develop and very in depth understanding of the use of essential oils and the ability to select and blend oils with real subtlety.

The programme will explore approaches to blending essential oils, how to select oils for intended purposes and how complementary oils work together. The course will also explore base oils and other associated products, including how to make various products such as lotions, gels and creams.

This course will them explore the safe and appropriate use of aromatherapy with animals, detailing specific contraindications. The course will also explore the concept of zoopharmacognocy and the horse’s ability to self-select based on its individual needs and how treatment can be approached on this basis.
